Comdr. Briggs,
c/o Rolls Royce,
14, Conduit Street,
W. 1.

Dear Briggs,

We have gone into the question of a differential for a 20 h.p. Rolls Royce Car, and we find that there is a certain amount of difficulty attached thereto.

If we take this axle as it stands the maximum roller race diameter which we can have will be 75 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m and this diameter is only suitable for a maximum weight of 24 cwts. this obviously would not do.

In the Rolls axle there is a tail end bearing for the bevel pinion and it is this fact that prevents a larger diameter of race being used.

For purposes of test I would like to know whether you would be prepared to suppress this tail end bearing, in which case we could give you a thoroughly satisfactory differential.

As you know there are very few cars made with the tail end bearing and I think no damage would occur in the 20 h.p. Rolls axle through lack of it.
