COPY. MEMORANDUM on the Experiences of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu while Inspector of Motor Vehicles in India as to Cooling of Water Circulation on Cars and Lorries. In India in the summer the temperature in the daytime rises as high as 130° F.{Mr Friese} and even at night does not fall below 100° F.{Mr Friese} The work of lorries and cars has to go on through this heat on essential services at certain Frontier posts. There are also severe gradients to be climbed such as that to Murree and the Khyber Pass, where in the first case there is a rise of about 6000 ft. in about 15 miles, and in the latter case a rise of about 3000 ft. in 9 miles. The first Thornycroft and Leyland lorries which were sent out to India were very deficient in cooling qualities, and spare water had to be taken on every journey during the summer in order to fill up the water in the radiator at certain points. The constant boiling of the water also tended to destroy or make leaky the joints in the water circulation, especially where rubber joints were employed. We found also by experience that the engine tended to lose power when it became over-heated. In view of all these circumstances I held two trials one in 1915 and another in 1916, to ascertain whether this overheating could not be reduced without | ||
