R.R. 20 HP. STARTER MOTOR BENDIX DRIVE WITH X3592 FRICTION DRIVE SCHEME.

Please add to the present specification the following points in order to suit the friction drive scheme:-

(1) The large gear wheel into which the Bendix pinion engages should be held solid.
The friction drive scheme should be carefully marked. The motor should now be switched on and it should be noted that after engagement the motor armature spindle turns slightly, proving that the friction drive is working and has a certain amount of slip.
It is essential that this test should not be carried on too long, as the friction device will not stand much slipping.

(2) The brake on the large gear wheel should be loaded so that the motor takes 110 amperes, and it should be ascertained, after running in this condition for one minute, that there is no signs of the friction device overheating, i.e. it is essential that during this test the friction device should not slip.

(3) After these two tests, the bendix gear mechanism should be checked to be sure it is quite free on the thread.
