RE. UNSATISFACTORY WHITTLE BELTS. X.3438

The complaint of these belts being unsatisfactory as regards causing noise on the dynamo drive is still prevalent, and we also find that there is considerable amount of noise caused by the belt drive to the fan, which in most cases we feel is being put down to the engine itself, such as engine gears, etc., but which we have demonstrated is caused by the belt drive to the fan.

We still think, however, that every endeavour should be made to procure belts for these drives which are more satisfactory in this respect.

We should be glad to hear what action is being taken as regards improvement in this respect, so that we can reply to the various complaints accordingly.

Apart from the above, there is also the complaint of the belts for the dynamo drive being unsatisfactory inasmuch as there is insufficient clearance between the belt and the case for the starter gear attachment to the side shaft of the gear box.

In order to make these belts satisfactory, we have to cut them down on test, which is a very unsatisfactory job, and which I am anxious to avoid.

The latest belts coming on test are still worse in this respect, and owing to their being wider, project from the gear box driving pulley still further, making the trouble much worse.

Could you please arrange for definite instructions to be given that before cars are put on test, a clearance of say .030 is obtained between the gear box and this belt in all positions of the belt.
