PHANTOM EXHAUST PIPES FOR CHASSIS FITTED WITH FRONT AXLE CONTROL.

X8230
X8420

Since it was not found possible to make a good job of the existing type of exhaust pipes when front axle control was applied with the hydraulic shock damper within the frame, we have made a scheme in which all the exhaust gas is evacuated through a single downtake. We send herewith LeCs. 2432/36/37. dealing with this

At the same time another improvement has been incorporated with a view to banishing the butterfly exhaust valve in the main downtake. This takes the form of a venturi in the downtake, the drop in pressure from which is utilised to induce a flow of exhaust gases through the carburetter uptake jacket. A small mushroom valve is provided in the cover plate at the bottom of the jacket to shut off the flow when the accelerator pedal is depressed.

Connection with the control valve is provided so that the valve is closed during the range from half to full throttle.

The engine side guard will require some modification to accommodate this exhaust scheme, and in so doing it should be arranged that the side guard avoids as far as possible blocking the air draught around the injector portion of the exhaust downtake. We think this is important to avoid overheating of the interior portion of this injector, which is not directly cooled.

With regard to the suspension of the front silencer it is thought that the point at which the silencer is longitudinally anchored should be moved forward as near as can conveniently be arranged to the exhaust downtake. We should be glad if you could make a scheme for this modification in Derby and send it to us, as also the sideguard.
