H.R. 495A (ROH) (D.A. 652 20-3-24) J.E.D. -2- Expl. No. 3587 REF:Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}7/LG27.6.24. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. The only other fault we have had with this drive was caused by the shoulder driving sleeve (D.51131) striking the inner sleeve (D.51132) when the pinion is thrown out of engagement. The continual bumping burred over the edge of the driving sleeve which caused the spring (D.51140) to stick. The parts have now been modified so that it cannot happen again. The drive works very well and should be definitely more reliable and quieter in action than the standard Bendix. LeC.1761. This is a similar scheme to the above except that it is designed to be applied to the present standard starter motor. It should be definitely more reliable than the scheme we are at present using - (1) because the design provides a proper spring in place of the cupped spring washers which have given considerable trouble, either due to breaking or taking a permanent set. (2) because of the better method of fixing the cork washer and taking the drive. (3) The drive is taken up more silently owing to the flexibility of the spring in place of the spring washers.
