We have to admit that the present system, apart from the weight and cost, is extremely efficient in silencing the engine for a reasonable power loss. We hope to be able to submit a simplified system shortly.

The 20/25 is more difficult. So far we have not had much success though we have tried many different modifications, but we propose to persevere.

As soon as we have got rid of our other pressing problems on the SpectreCodename for Phantom III we shall review the exhaust system.

Intake Silencers.

It is surprising how an article which is fundamentally simple in design can become costly through the material specification. We quote as an example our intake silencer, relative to which we attach a report. We should certainly have hesitated to standardise the Vokes air silencer filter element had we realised that this cost, (7/10d.) per Bentley chassis would be involved in quantities, as we believe we can replace it by something worth about 1/-. This we are proposing to do on the Bentley chassis, but of course there will be some delay as a further 15,000 miles test will be required.

Now that we have access to costs, we want to establish an economic price for air intake silencers, since every engine we make in the future is likely to require such a silencer, and they are all fundamentally very much the same and really very simple. We shall be disappointed if we cannot get 33.1/3% off the existing cost without materially affecting efficiency.
