DERBY.

For the attention of Mr. West.

Dear Sirs,

Thank you very much for your letter of the 21st inst., and for your complimentary remarks regarding our Car Radio Equipment. We have carefully noted your criticisms, for which we are grateful, and would make the following remarks on them:-

(a) You state that the speaker accentuates low frequencies inordinately. We would point out that with the average car radio installation where the receiver is fitted to a finished car, only a small baffle is usually possible, with the result that if the bass were not accentuated in the speaker the reproduction would sound unpleasantly "thin." In the case of the installation on your experimental car an infinitely large baffle is provided by the position adopted for the loudspeaker.

To overcome this accentuation in the particular instance in question we would suggest that the speaker unit be spaced away from its baffle by, say, 1/8" or 1/4", and that the underside of the shelf forming the baffle be either fitted with one or two stiffening strips, or covered with a thick felt to prevent baffle resonance. We believe that this will improve the reproduction considerably.

With regard to (b) and (c) - the questions of weight and simplicity of control, we may, in the near future, release a new model car radio, in the design of which both the points you mention have received careful attention. This will not replace
