R R.{Sir Henry Royce} 235 A (100 T) (S-F) 846 6 S-19) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2460 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}18/F12.2.20 X 3439 RE. CLUTCH SPIGOT OIL VALVE LEAKING. Further to your BY/G34/H30.1.20, replying to my EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/F29.1.20 in which I complained that this was giving trouble on cars on test, I note that the matter has been brought to the attention of the Experimental Dept. Meantime, action is being taken by the Works to effect an improvement in the manufacture and the fitting of this valve, as per suggestions contained in my memo, above referred to, copy of which was sent to Sft.{Mr Swift} We still continue to have trouble with this valve leaking on test, for no apparent reason except that the seating of this valve is unreliable owing to the false bedding which it gets due to the stem of the valve being unspigoted. Although it may be pointed out that this is the same type of valve which has been used since the first 40/50 car was made, I feel that the fact that this is not working properly may have been the cause of several clutch troubles which we have had in the past. I am anxious, therefore, that we should make a valve which at least we know is reliable. Apart from any schemes which may be suggested and put through experimentally, therefore, I am anxious that in the meantime we should make the best of the present valve and although an improvement can be effected in this respect by reducing the width of seating, the seating should as far as possible be spherical, so that it will always be oil-tight whatever position the valve spigot may take up on its guide. I should be glad to hear from you whether any instructions have been given in this respect and what action is being taken by Mr. Swift to deal with engines now being made, and if same can be done on engines now on test.
