X.2907 - EXPERIMENTS RE FLOW OF LIQUIDS THROUGH ORIFICES, AND PIPES OF DIFFERENT CROSS SECTIONAL AREAS AND FORMS.

With reference to your memo R5/B7217, I had quite appreciated the nature of the experiments which you really require in this connection. My scheme of dividing the subject into four sub-sections already enumerated, was not with a view to doing experimental work under each of these headings separately, but rather with a view to clearing up th ground, so to speak, of these four simple cases before proceeding to make experiments of the nature suggested by your present memo.

It was my intention to prepare a short summary of the experimental work that has been performed under each of the four headings, and to send you copies of these summaries for reference, in the first instance. The first two sections are, of course, to be found in any book on Hydraulics and perhaps it is hardly necessary to make a summary of these; only I do not quite understand from what source Mr. Elliott obtained, or for what reasons Mr. Elliott used the rule, (area2 / perimeter) as applied to the flow of liquids through orifices, because I have never understood this flow to vary in any other proportion than that of the simple area of the orifice, except as regards slight variations in the "Coefficient of Discharge" due to varying heads, etc., The result of experimental work under the 3rd and 4th section are not so generally
