PHANTOM III FRONT BRAKES COMING ON WHEN CAR IS JACKED UP.

Referring to E/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}1/MN.19.11.36., we object to owners being instructed to adjust their rear brakes up to the last notch, but their front brakes to the last but one, on Phantom III. If it is thought necessary or desirable to run the front brakes with more clearance to overcome the wheel washing and balancing difficulty, then we think we ought to instruct a front adjuster cam with higher lift; and, in the meantime, we would prefer owners to be instructed to slack back their front brakes before jacking up the front wheels for washing. This would make it necessary for the Works to send the cars out with the adjuster screwed up two notches.

In any case, we do not think it advisable to increase the clearance between front brake shoes and drum as this directly affects the safety of the motor car, which is a more important matter, and memos Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}14/E.8.10.36., Bt.{Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer}6/MD.7.10.36., and EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}15/MH.{M. Huckerby}24.9.36. show that the safety factor of the brakes is not great enough as it is.
