BENSPORT GEARBOX.
-------------------

Hdy.{William Hardy}(WW) was speaking to me on the telephone yesterday, and he emphasized the following points :-

(1). It was agreed that we should increase the centres of the brackets carrying the servo by 1" to enable us to increase the diameter of the servo gear by a like amount.

(2). Although we had explained to him that we had increased the strength of the Bensport 3rd. Motion shaft in a similar manner to what had been done on Phantom, Hdy.{William Hardy} stated that R.{Sir Henry Royce} insisted on him finishing a design which he was sending. If this does not correspond with what we have done we will bring our design into line. with NS{Norman Scott}3590 just received

Hdy.{William Hardy} pointed out that R.{Sir Henry Royce} considered the failure of the shaft was simply due to the high stresses introduced by the synchromesh gear, as changes were made when the engine and chassis were not in correct speed relationship, and the 3rd. Motion Shaft had to take care of this, and the result was that at the forward end the stresses rose very high, but it was not necessary to increase the size of the rear end of the shaft. We agreed with this, and stated that our design had been based on it.

(3). We should incorporate in the gearbox the same reduction for the servo mechanism as we have arranged on Peregrine.

(4). Hdy.{William Hardy} asked whether we had made the necessary arrangements for the governor control damper gear to be fitted to the gearboxes. We explained that we had done it on 40/50 and 20/25, but not for Peregrine or J.ll.
