300B To RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}1/MJ.21.10.36. CONTINENTAL PHANTOM UNIT NO.14. We give herewith a revised and complete specification for the above unit which was originally instructed in the memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}12/KW.16.6.36. (1) Crankshaft instructed by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} including reduced dia. crankpin, special lightened Packard type balance weights and an extra hole in each journal at 180° to existing. (2) Ex.22402/3 Big end bearing in AC.1.Alloy to suit above crankshaft. Diametrical clearance of the forked rod bearings to be .00225 and .003 on the blade rods. (3) Blade rods similar to Ex.22525 but in material suitable for case hardening the bearing surface of the rods. In view of the grooved surface with the Chromium plated rods on No.6 unit we have decided on the above. The strap rods otherwise as LOP.E.86125 including the drilling of the oil jet holes in the rods which is Standard practice. (4) Main bearings and liners in A.C.1 Alloy. (5) Lightened cylinder liners to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}242. (6) 1½ engine speed dynamo in conjunction with a 25/30 dynamo as instructed in the memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}1/KW.18.8.36. (7) Ex.23245 camshaft which will be removed from No.8 unit following development work. (8) Automatic tappet action to be stopped by removal of the plunger return springs. Plungers to be replaced by solid pieces in S/N. Oil feed holes in plunger casings to be blanked. The push rods, also the cylinder retaining studs will have to be .150 shorter to suit the modified heads. Bottom tappets non fescolised with a cloud burst hardened surface. (9) 4 Port Heads (Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}160) which will be removed from No.8 unit following the development work. As soon as possible we should like the strengthened S/SLV. exhaust valves fitting (LEC.5305). These have the reduced clearance .0015 - .002. In conjunction with this job we should like a set of the original type of double valve springs E.86364/5. | ||
