BENTLEY OVERHEAD CAMSHAFT ENGINE.

We give below a few points for consideration in connection with the Bentley Overhead Camshaft Engine:-

Lec.4858-4914-4923-RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}143-239-280-284-291.

1. No provision is made for assembling and dismantling the front damper flywheel with sprocket wheel in position.

2. The solid copper gasket RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}228 is not satisfactory. It is very difficult to obtain a watertight joint.

3. The groove in the top face of wheelcase RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}111 is too deep for the rubber oil seal, and will not make an effective joint.

4. Inlet and Exhaust Rocker Shafts RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}144-5 are not foolproof. These shafts are handed by the drilling of the oil feed holes to rockers, and in the case of wrong assembly the oiling scheme is ruined.
These rocker shafts are held rotationally by (1) a locating washer at the rear end and (2) by a locating screw in the centre. We suggest that one of these schemes only be employed as both of them are not necessary.
In addition the rocker shaft is prevented from turning by the 7 holding down bolts which bite into the rocker shafts.

5. Insufficient clearance around the spark plugs. A standard spanner cannot be used owing to the close proximity of inlet port bosses etc.

6. Suggest that the three studs in cylinder head for water outlet pipe RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}281 be respaced. The uppermost boss on the outlet pipe is fouling the .250" radius on cylinder head.

7. Cylinder head Ex.20400 requires machining on the end face on No.1. camshaft bearing housing adjacent to the sprocket wheel. A foul was experienced at this point on B.23. unit.

8. Suggest on the oil pipe layout that the feed pipe be taken behind the chain case and not round the chain case as shewn on RS.{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}291.
