R.R. cys. (19) 2M. 4/11. 2542. G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} & S. ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED, 14 & 15, CONDUIT STREET, LONDON, W. INSTRUCTIONS. To: Lord Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} de Rothschild Order No. _______ Customer's No. "Booming" in existing Cars. I have today carried out some good tests on a brougham at Brooklands. 1) The roof was first stiffened by steel fish-plates screwed to the joists (wood slats) & the booming noted by a complete spectrum of elastic bands tuned to resonate as roof. 2) The fish-plates were then pinned & the booming renoted until the elastic bands tuned to the lower note. The roof in 1st stiffened condition boomed less than in the 2nd unstiffened condition & one could feel the difference in our ears. The new untried stiffened roof idea cannot well be applied to existing cars but I think when a customer complains of a booming roof we can, as the next best thing, improve matters by stiffening the roof by a means of fish-plating at a moderate cost. The fish-plates increase the weight of roof from 10 to 15 lbs. Signed: I. d'Esterre This Sheet must be filed on completion of the work. | ||
