~~TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}~~ FROM AJS ORIGINAL AJS1/M6.1.26. / Copy to - ~~R.H.~~ " HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X7650 IMPROVEMENTS FOR NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I STARTER. We are, under above heading, making alterations as follow:- (a) Altered overall gearing ratio between starter motor and engine, from 30. to 22 to 1. (b) Taking the main circuit switch from the solenoid actuator and arranging same so that the main circuit current will not be brought in until the pinion is almost fully engaged. (c) Owing to (b) modifications have been necessary to the actuator solenoid unit, first, the elimination of the main circuit control switch, second, the arrangement of the solenoid armature in such a way that it can be withdrawn to enable the timing of the main circuit switch both initially and after the car has been used to be set without undue dismantling of many parts, third, the simplification of the armature and other parts of the actuator as has been allowed for by the previous point (2), fourth, the provision of a stop for armature as the forward portion of solenoid magnet now acts as a stop for the pinion only. (d) A redesign of the starter switch as referred to in R1/M251125. (e) A slight modification to the terminals of the automatic switch in view of (d). Modifications in (a) have been sent you under cover of AJS1/M301225., and (b) under cover of AJS1/M311225. Those under (c) we are sending herewith on LeC. 2190. (print to R.{Sir Henry Royce}) The last two items will follow in a day or two. AJS. | ||
