REPORT ON FABRIC COUPLING TEST. X8305

We are carrying out tests on the joggling rig with various fabric couplings. Attached herewith is a sketch showing the rig. After several preliminary runs we decided on a speed of 285 r.p.m., or 570 reversals per minute.

The information we have obtained from this test so far is that the most important factor is how the fabric is held. If we insert distance pieces between the plates which are riveted to the fabric, the life of the coupling is very considerably reduced.

On the test with the thicker fabric coupling we find that the rivets are the weakest part and these come loose before any other part of the coupling is damaged.

On the coupling which failed on the road, there was no distinct signs of the rivets coming loose.

We have now therefore reduced the speed of the joggling rig to 240 r.p.m. to see whether we can destroy the coupling without breaking the rivets. This means, of course, that the test will take very much longer.

Attached is a sheet giving the results on test so far.
