X7230 W/S. To Hn.{F. C. Honeyman - Retail orders} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson}5/KT.30.1.33. PHANTOM EXHAUST SYSTEMS. With reference to Hn{F. C. Honeyman - Retail orders}1/I/25.1.33. I am afraid we have had no experience whatever with regard to fumes in the body of cars with overhanging backs which we can attribute to the fishtail. The cases that have come to our knowledge, via the Repair Dept who deal with finished cars, have all been due to the petrol filler cap being covered in. I presume you have a number of these cars running about now, and should be glad to know whether you have evidence that the long tail pipe is a necessity. If it is, it will be necessary for us to carry out some silencer tests on this long pipe, as any alterations from the standard exhaust system is likely to bring up booms. The new type resonant silencer will not be any better in this respect than the old one, once it is found necessary to depart from the standard length of swanneck. Our own experience has been that cars with overhanging backs emphasise exhaust booms. We have no cars with such a body, but we hope to do some work on Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s NEW car before it leaves the factory. We should like to keep in touch with you on this subject, and if you have a particularly bad example of a finished car suffering from exhaust booms, we should be glad to have the opportunity of trying it.
