X 1583 Exptl. Dept. HSZRm.14/KW. 22nd November, 1934. Captain S.B. Wilks, Managing Director, The Rover Company Ltd., COVENTRY. Dear Capt. Wilks, Referring to High Pressure Lubricants, throughout our work on hypoid axles the only oil which has consistently given us satisfaction is Whitmore's oil. We have in turn tried and abandoned Mobiloil high pressure lubricant, Castrol Gear Ease, Wakefield's EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} (2 types), and Duckham's Keanalised Oil. We do not say that these oils are no good, but they were not good enough under the particularly severe conditions to which we subjected them. We are still anxious to run a British extreme pressure lubricant and are at present experimenting with Wakefield's Hi-Press Oil. This is a lubricant of about the viscosity of Castrol XXL. We are not using it on production yet, but it has passed all our preliminary tests satisfactorily. We shall, however, know more about it in about 12 months time. It is certainly the best we have so far had for its effect on oil ducts and ball races. Yours sincerely, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
