contd:- -2- made it quite clear that it was impossible to supply these levers. Fortunately, the order was rescinded. I have further discussed with Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} the question of modernising existing Goshawks at the Works, but this, he explained, is impossible at the present stage, at the same time, it could be argued that experimental work can still be carried on and with the present arrangement as regards disposing of the modern Goshawk cars, this is so, unless some drastic alteration is required which will have to be fixed on 7-Goshawk-11 or other modern cars. Noisy side shaft gear box. As regards the side shaft noises in the gear box, is it considered that this is of serious importance. It is a prevalent feature with all the gear boxes, and in testing one on the 'stand', it appears to be entirely a question of gear noise, which Sft.{Mr Swift} says he can overcome by fixing in different shaped tooth gears. He has eliminated the question of bearings and I am now getting him to ascertain whether it is the reverse pinion or side shaft gear, or both, which is causing the noise. I am also trying whether the noise can be affected by a better supply of oil through the side shaft gears. Although it may not be considered an objectionable noise it is a noise which will certainly be brought to our attention by Sales or customers. "B" steering pedals. Have you any further information to convey re. this point. We have done nothing in regard to this matter but instructions have been sent through from the D.O. for alteration to the pedals, which instructions have been sent from W.W. We have also received instructions for a scheme of instrument board support for the "B" steering. Sales Dept. are rather anxious to try out the driving seats for the "B" steering with these fitments in place. - What about it! Will it be in order for us to fix this job up on 3-Goshawk-11 (limousine) which is the car which we are, as far as possible, modernising in preference to others and, as a matter of fact, is now giving a very good performance as regards power etc., quite as good as any other Goshawk car we have here. Noisy dynamo drive. This seems rather bad on 7-Goshawk-11 - on this car there rather seems to be an exceptional amount of slack in the drive and it is chiefly in the connection between the idle shaft and the driving pinion, but it is up to drawing clear-ances, but it certainly appears that this joint will work itself free and will not remain a close fit in the serrations. I think this point is well worth bringing up for consideration, at the same time, I am not making any suggestions but am pointing it out as a likely fault we shall have to deal with sooner or later.
