REAR AXLE AND BRAKE - MYTH

Pl.J72 attached shows the rear axle and brakes for Myth. The rear axle centre casing tubes and shafts are of Salisbury construction and are shown on here principally for reference purposes, being traced from Salisbury drawings HA. 001-2 and 001-5.

The brakes are Lockheed 2-leading shoe type with bisector for handbrake operation. The brakes generally follow the Lockheed arrangement drawing TR.{Capt. F. W. Turner - Finance}652, but with the usual R.R. type water excluder, of thinner gauge material than the carrier plate proper. This feature saves us at least 3 lbs. per car.

Of the two alternative types of brake drum shown, the one to be detailed is the combined drum and hub. This again is slightly lighter than the alternative scheme, by virtue of the saving in weight possible on the wheel, owing to the increased bolt circle diameter.

Prints of the carrier plate water excluder and shoe rests are required as soon as possible, for sending to Lockheeds, as they are making up sample sets for testing.

The rear axle ratio required, on the first car at lease, is 4.88 to 1.
