SUSPENSION. X840 X4429

We have carried out tests on a Phantom car fitted with front springs giving an initial deflection of 4.6" i.e., 50% weaker than the standard front wheel brake springs. We were unable to appreciate any marked improvement in the riding comfort of the car at the back either by our own personal impressions or by our measuring apparatus.

The increase in riding comfort in the front seats was very definitely noticeable.

The springs employed in these tests were special springs made for us by Messrs. Firths giving a 4.6" deflection at flat camber so that the front of the car was raised half an inch for the test.

We have also carried out tests to ascertain the movement of the back axle when running over our trial road. We found that the movement of the axle was very appreciable i.e., it does not look as if the springs are solidly following the road contour and the frequency of the vibrations are much the same as those experienced when sitting in the body.
