HIGH SPEED STEERING WOBBLES. +430

We have carried out confirmatory tests on the centre point axle fitted with disc wheels. On this occasion we took particular care that the out of balance weight should be in the same vertical plane as the tyre centre.

The general results were the same as previously recorded, only the disparity between the two conditions was much less marked. With centre point steering we got a wobble which started at 61 m.p.h. and continued to the max. speed we could attain. On the overrun it was maintained to 57 m.p.h. The wobble was not particularly violent. With the wheels reversed giving 5 1/4" out of centre point, the wobble occurred at the same speed but with reduced intensity. It continued on the overrun to a speed of 59 m.p.h. We consider this result to be more accurate than that previously given. In the former case the out of balance was not bolted centrally on the rim. Its moment about the king pin was more than that of the tyre centre when the wheels were fitted normally, and less when the [crossed out] wheels were running dished out.
