To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EFC. c. to CJ. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} EFC3/T17.11.19. X.3317 - RE "BUICK" BATTERY Further to our EFC5/T25.9.19, the two end cells, before being taken to pieces, each gave approximately 19.5 ampere hours after standing charged for about a week. These were then re-charged and discharged almost immediately, when No.1 appeared to give no capacity at all and No.3 gave a capacity of 70 ampere hours. No.1 was therefore taken to pieces and cleaned out and recharged as an open cell, after which treatment it gave 42.5 amperes. The failures were undoubtedly due to the accumulation of paste, probably due to excessive overcharging, as it is apparent that the cells give a reasonable proportion of their full capacity when the mud short circuiting the plates has been removed.
