B.60 and B.80 - MODIFICATION TO SHEET STEEL TAPPET COVERS.

Please receive herewith :-

E.CD.1446 Modified Sheet Steel Tappet Covers. B.60 and B.80.

In order to prevent the pressing deforming when tightening up the fixing nuts, we have added a tension plate on the inner side of cover plate, this is held in position by spot welding around the rim, which should form a very rigid cover. The inner plate will also prevent oil from reaching the holes for the fixing nuts where considerable leakage has occurred on the existing covers.

Should the difference in the thicknesses of tension plate and cover be too great for effective spot welding, we can increase the former but/not wish to do so on account /do of weight.

To reduce the spannering torque on the nuts, the size of the hexagon has been reduced from 5/16" hex. to 1/4 hex. and soft aluminium washers are shown to make a joint between covers and nuts.

The contact radius of the tappet cover with the cork joint is reduced to give a higher unit pressure on joint.

Will you please detail and instruct the new parts for test on the B.80 engine, and if successful, the modifications should be applied to the B.60 and also to the Conventional C.I. engines.
