TORSION AND OSCILLATION TESTS ON FRONT ROAD SPRINGS.

Springs of different rating were tested to compare their resistance to twisting when subjected to a torque similar to that obtained by the application of the brakes on the car.
A testing rig was arranged as below :-

P
Pull measured by spring balance.
L
POINTER
W
Wt. to give flat camber to spring.

The length of the torque arm L. was 16" which is approximately the same as the equivalent arm through which the torque acts when the spring is mounted on the car.
The test apparatus was arranged to give the same conditions as when the spring was subjected to braking torque on the car.
Wt. W is eqvt. to reaction of wheel on road.
Force P is eqvt. to frictional force between tyre and road.
The tabulated results of these tests are given and curves supplied.
