To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy for J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} With reference to the coil on 2301, when testing this the other day, I found it missing fire very badly at high speeds. Hurst informs me that the ignition was con-nected to three Edison cells, which according to the Edison figures are only expected to give 1.2 voltage each. This fault was cured by increasing the number of cells to which the coil was attached. We do not expect our coil, with the ignition plugs at .025", to give sufficient electric motive force to overcome this gap with an engine having rather greater compression, unless the low tension contact makes contact longer than the usual period. We must therefore reduce the distance be-tween the pints or increase the electric motive force if we want the coil to work at high speed. R.{Sir Henry Royce} (Sgd) F.H.R.
