exactly over the line of the front subframe brackets and to each end hung a mass of lead equivalent to 200 lbs., or more than the front weight of the body. On the rear we had a test kit representing the weight of the body on the rear subframe supports. We then considered that we had a similar weight distribution to that of a bodied chassis with slightly less rotational moment of inertia. The results on the road shewed that we had altered the characteristic of the car very little and it was difficult to detect any increase in radiator movement.
(3) The next step was to fit one of the large covered test bodies direct to the chassis with no subframe. This body was bolted solidly down. The radiator movement in this condition was still of a minor nature and in no way comparable with that of 18-EX.
(4) We next fitted the body intended for the chassis on its subframe. Radiator movement was considerable, - similar condition prevailing to those on 18-EX.
(5) We then fitted the torsionally stiff rubber engine feet to the car in condition (4) which produced an immediate alleviation of radiator movement, reducing it by about 80%.
(6) We then fitted solid packing under the front subframe supports and bolted the scuttle armature rigidly to the dash. This produced a considerable improvement in radiator movement but the trouble was still definitely more emphatic than in condition (3). Furthermore the effect of engine roughness was increased as that also of torque reaction - the body having a tendency to boom.
