Despatched 23.11.26. --------------------------------- PHANTOM, STEERING AND LIGHTENED FRONT AXLE. As you are aware, the lightened front axle has been standardized for use on C.2. Series, but since standardizing the general scheme certain improvements have been called for as a result of running in France, which Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and myself have agreed, as the result of a conference we held on the matter, that the improvements in question on the steering are essential and should be incorporated even at the cost of a certain amount of scrap. The improvements in question are as follows:- a/- Modified cross steering tube arranged in such a manner that the frictional damping on the ball is produced to control and stabilise the steering. To incorporate this scheme in place of the standard cross steering which was standardized at the time would mean £37. 5. 0. in scrap. b/- A modified side steering tube has also been found necessary in order to overcome reaction shocks on the steering wheel, resulting from bad roads. This matter was fully considered and we are of the opinion that it is essential to the reputation of the Company that we should scrap the existing material at a cost of £86. all told, and bring in the new proposal at the commencement of C.2. Series. If we have your consent to the above at once we shall be able to make both the above changes without holding up production, but there is very little time to spare and it is therefore important we should have your decision on the matter by return.
