To Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to Idy. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} X 306 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/APM.5/JH.11.3.36. Phantom III Hand Brake Lever. In reply to Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}/Csh.1/G.6.3.36. we say that any improvement, however slight, is necessary on this lever. At present this brake is incapable of holding the car on steep slopes: it requires such a large pull to park the car on a moderate slope, that only a man could drive the car, and unless the lever reaches the end of its quadrant when applied hard, it is impossible to get it off. Therefore we think scrappin these parts is justifiable, but we would like to test the new ones before you do so. we think we shall be compelled to scrap the dies for the hand brake lever shortly, as the shortness of the stroke of this lever is the root of the whole trouble.
