RE. IMPROVEMENTS IN THE ATTACHMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE ROAD SPRINGS.

X. 8410
X. 433

We have had submitted to us patent No.32913/25 belonging to a Mr. Douglas Robertson of Australia, dealing with a method of overcoming the rattles in road springs due to the side clearance of the springs in the shackles and other attachments.

The idea is similar in principle to the serrated pads and rollers we are using at present on the rear axle, and consists of using a threaded sleeve and bush in the spring eye and shackle end, the sleeve being tightly clamped between the cheeks of the dumb iron or shackle and forming in effect a serrated base upon which the load of the spring end is carried.

An alternative method of construction is to use a sleeve turned with Vee shaped rings, but this necessitates splitting the bush which is forced into the spring eye, and is therefore not so good.

The objection to the thread would be that it sets up a slight end movement, but with a fine pitch thread this movement should not be very much.

It is stated that two cars have been fitted up in this manner and tried out with success under Australian conditions. The threads employed were .062 deep, and of 100° included angle in the Vee of the thread.

Mr. Royce thinks the scheme is a very good one, and he would like you to try it out at Derby on an actual chassis to determine if it accomplishes all that is claimed for it.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
