6042. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RC.{R. Childs}7/JH. 7th March, 1938. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Stone & Company Ltd., Deptford, LONDON.S.E.14. Dear Sirs, With reference to the visit here, on February 10th, of your representative, in connection with the possibility of fitting one of your types of regulator on our cars. It will be remembered that the outcome of the discussion was that your type H regulator could probably be adopted to our requirements, except in one important respect. The drawback arises from the fact that at the low speeds, when operating as a simple machine, our dynamo requires the strongest possible field, in order to obtain a reasonably low cutting in speed. At the same time, no provision is made on the regulator for short circuiting the carbon pile when it is not required; so that at all times there would be some external resistance in the field circuit. A second possible drawback was the approximate price given of £10. It was decided that we should look over our dynamo with a view to seeing whether it could be arranged to tolerate a small amount of external resistance, in the field circuit. This we have now done but must confirm that the limit of size and weight do not allow of anything short of a fully excited field winding. In addition we must also confirm our fear that the price of your unit would be too high we find that the price of our present unit is only about £1. Thanking you for the kind attention your have given this matter. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
