Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} On bringing the matter before Mr. Royce with regard to the use of the word "Knock" Mr. Royce now suggests the following alternative paragraph, and we shall be glad to have your approval of the same before inserting in the above book:- "All engines which have a good and accurately adjusted carburetter are liable to detonate, which causes a sound usually called "chirping or pinking". Occasionally it is thought to be pre-ignition, but this is not so. This tendency is greatly increased by the presence of carbon in the combustion chamber. It can be avoided by transferring the magneto plug to what we term the intermediate position; a brass plug will be found in this portion of the cylinder. This detonating sound is caused by the very rapid combustion of the explosive mixture. It does not appear to do any harm, but is irritating. It only takes place with very rapidly burning fuels, and not with benzol or alcohol, which burn comparatively slowly" [Handwritten note] Mr Mercer Reminds this before Na.{Mr Nadin} J 12/1/14 Exp dept.
