X5060 To Rn.{Mr Robinson} " E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Whyman.8/KT.19.6.33. SILENT TAPPET MECHANISM ON J.II. ENGINE. We have now run another set of silent tappets built up to Lec. 3086-3213 on the test bed with rather disappointing results. The engine had only run for 3 hrs. when No.7 eccentric E.58376 (cast-iron) broke straight across the oil hole. This was replaced by a steel eccentric, but after 2 hrs. further running 3 plunger springs E.58935 collapsed, and as the tester on the bed was doing carburation tests, the whole of the silent tappet mechanism was taken off and replaced by standard tappet mechanism to enable him to carry on with his job.
