SS.{S. Smith} VALVE GEAR. X7060 / X7090

With further reference to the lubrication of valve gear, especially under conditions when the car is started off from cold, we have two schemes for effecting some improvement e.g. submerging the camshaft and tappets in oil, and flowing the relief oil from the pump over the valvegear.

A third scheme suggests itself if we carry the oil pressure out to the push-rod end of the valve rocker.

The whole of the tappet and push-rod mechanism can be pressure lubricated without much trouble since the push-rod is already a tube.

The weight of oil added to the moving parts would be inconsiderable since the bore of the tube is only about half its external diameter.

The oil escaping from the tappet and push-rod generally should run down and lubricate the cam face.

A practical difficulty would be the drilling of the central hole in the tappet, but this part might be built up from tube.
