X3458 EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} BY16/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 18. 6. 24. CHASSIS 56-S-5. EXCESSIVE WEAR ON BRAKE DRUMS. ------------------------------- We should not scrap Brake Drums immediately they begin to wear or show roughness. The brake drums can be cleaned up until a minimum thickness of the shell of the drum is arrived at of .125" The brake shoes must not be stretched to cover this increased diameter, but an aluminium packing must be inserted between the aluminium brake shoe and the ferodo facing, the thickness of which must be the amount removed from the drum. This will obviate any unnecessary filing on the brake liners. We are considering a scheme which I propose to run experimentally for fitting in steel liners rivetted to the shell so as to obviate having to scrap the drum itself. We are in agreement with the work done on 56-S-5, being booked to Works Policy against Order No. 50517, but the Depots should be informed of the procedure to be adopted in future so that a similar situation will not arise as has occurred in the case of this particular chassis. We suggest that the hubs and drums are put into order, made ready for use against a demand for urgent delivery on a car with a similar fault. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} [Signature] | ||
