RE CYLINDER WELDING+

We have made up cylinders with the butt type of weld. They have still to be finished machining before we can run up. It is only on the vertical seam of the jacket. where one can notice the untidy appearance of the butt weld. This is due to the fact that without the flange the jacket is not self.supporting. As soon as it has been got hot enough to weld, the jacket sinks in. The appearance is nothing like as bad as our first attempts on welding. We consider the joint round the the valve bend is stronger and quite as neat a job when done with the butt weld. The jacket there is supported with the bend so that one can get it to the necessary welding heat without it falling away. The angle between the jacket and the flange on the valve bend can be filled in with a fillet of welding metal. We are sending to Mr. Royce a section of an American cylinder which shews the welding in various parts. It is noticed that there is a weak spot underneath the valve bend where the vertical joint joins.
