X5820? Dep. [crossed out] c.Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} [crossed out] e.p./HM.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} [crossed out] BYL/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 13.7.27. 20 HP. CHASSIS - RE STANDARDIZATION OF 6" SECTION x 33" TYRES. Upon receipt of the standardization sheet for the above proposal, which, although it was originally intended for customers' requirements only, is now being pushed by R.{Sir Henry Royce} very strongly for immediate adoption, we looked into the whole question to make sure there were no snags likely to arise. We found it was not possible to get the larger section tyre between the cross tube connecting the dumb iron to the end of the frame, and the petrol tank. The only way out of the difficulty we could see which could be applied quickly, was to raise the spare wheel carrier. We therefore wrote to Sales, pointing out that this would be necessary. We attach hereto copy of Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}22/M.12.7.27. in which Sales are opposing the lifting of the wheel. Since the proposal is being pushed by R, it will be necessary for some immediate attention to be given to the carrying of the spare wheel. This was the reason we raised the issue with Sales, as we expected them to tell us that there was insufficient room for us to lift the spare wheel the amount necessary, namely, 2.625". Whilst we raised the bottom of the tyre 2.625" the increased height at the top of the wheel is only 2.250" higher, owing to the fact that the new tyre is 1" less in diameter measured over the tread.
