COPY X3587 Bijur Motor Appliance Company Hoboken, New Jersey January 2, 1923. Rolls-Royce of America, Inc., Springfield, Mass. Dear Sirs:- Attention: Mr. M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Olley Replying to your letter of the 21st ult. in reference to the report from England on the Bijur Automatic shift. The spring washers used for shock absorption are made from heat-treated steel of the following analysis: Carbon .70 Manganese .51 Silican .19 Chromium .93 Nickel 4.26 Sulphur .020 Phosphorus .020 These washers undoubtedly squashed flat during test for the reason they were drawn at too high a temperature. In our later design of the detachable shift, we have eliminated these dished washers for the reason that we have found that they contribute nothing to shock absorption. In other words, the shock is sufficiently absorbed by the clutch without necessitating the use of these washers. We are enclosing herewith duplicate copy of this letter to be mailed to England. If there is anything further we can give you in this connection, we trust you will let us hear from you. Yours very truly, RPL-K (Signed) R.{Sir Henry Royce} P. Lansing Chief Engineer. | ||
