we are in some doubt as to the policy in connection
with the above. We have sent you a spring loaded piston, and a
method (N. scn. 3229.) of a considerable increase in the dia. of
the shaft using existing castings. We are about to start on the
design of a completely new damper as we have now had sufficient
instructions from R. {Sir Henry Royce} to enable us to do so.

In the meanwhile we wonder how urgent the question
of a revised damper is in connection with the L.H. chassis. We have
made a drawing - N. scn. 3240. - which we send herewith, shewing
a greatly increased dia. shaft, and also a larger square in accordance
with R2/M23.2.31. This involves a new damper body but follows the
existing damper practice and would no doubt be quicker to get going
than an entirely new damper, but in R's recent memo. we are instruct-
ed {J. L. Edwards} to begin an entirely new damper, and there is some doubt in
our minds whether it is worth while going on with N. scn. 3240.
Perhaps you will be able to decide.

We also send N. scn. 3237. which merely shews the
method of lubrication of the bearings from the low pressure side.
In other respects it is superseded by N. scn. 3240. It will be
understood that on N. scn. 3229. the view on the L.H. side is a
completely different proposition as this represents a stiffer shaft
using existing castings.
