Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Martindale, I have now had an opportunity of examining the portion of Millenite drum lining, badly scored, which you sent to me. I can straight away tell you that this bears not the slightest resemblance in microstructure to the iron alloy we know as Millenite and is indeed a most extraordinary mixture of soft Ferrite in large patches. The difficulties of reproducing an ideal structure in an alloy cast iron are severe enough in a drum of appreciable dimensions but in a thin liner of this small section they must be nearly insuperable. It is unfortunate that S.5805 should be associated in any way with this metal liner because it is my considered opinion, judging from the microstructure, that any friction lining would cause its collapse in the manner shown by this sample. I think it would be very interesting for Mr. Hall to polish a section right across the working path and examine it at 1/8" intervals under the microscope and I should be interested to see if his opinion confirms mine. Yours truly, FERODO LIMITED J.Nongley Chief Chemist & Director. | ||
