Messrs. John Marston Ltd.,
Wolverhampton.

For the attention of Mr. Dunn.

Dear Sirs,

As discussed over the telephone yesterday in conversation with Mr. Dunn, we are forwarding to you a Phantom III oil cooler which has been used in service and have given no trouble - this is of the hand soldered type, and is being returned to you so that you can experiment and decide whether it is feasible to convert it to the dip soldered type by cleaning and dipping complete.

We also send you herewith a Phantom III oil cooler which has failed in service - it is leaking at two points, one on the centre division plate and the other adjacent to the division plate (see yellow paint markings) from examination it can be seen that the cooler (a hand soldered one) has been hand soldered at these points and presumably the solder has not penetrated to any depth.

We should like you to try and repair this in an exactly similar manner i.e. by cleaning and dipping complete and give us your opinion of the practicability of this method - if necessary this cooler can be sectioned or dismantled after dipping for examination of the soundness of the solder bond.

We shall like the answers to the above queries at the earliest possible opportunity.

The writer would like you to give him the composition of the solder which you are using at present for these coolers - do you think any improvement could be made in this direction.

Finally you have at your works six oil coolers which have failed in service and been returned to you - Nos. E.14, E.25, E.174, E.237, E.385 and one other number unknown.
