The allocation of £4,000 to Body Development was based on expenditure of previous years, but in accordance with Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/R.17.3.39, we were warned to expect a heavy expenditure on Experimental bodies in 1939, particularly in regard to the Continental type. These returns prove the surmise to be correct.

These returns are accumulated from accurate cost figures obtained from G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp}, furthermore, a most careful check is now exercised in the Experimental Dept. to eliminate any possibility of aero expenditure creeping into chassis costs.

The allocation of a budgeted figure and the allotment of same to various sections of the Department is a useful method of determining quickly how money is being expended, we shall therefore, be pleased if you will consider a figure of £50,000 for the 1940 chassis budget, allotted as follows :-

HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} Labour ... ... ... ... £22,500
HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} Material ... ... ... £ 8,500
Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Labour ... ... ... ... £ 7,000
Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Material ... ... ... £ 6,000
Body Development ... ... ... ... £ 6,000
Total budgeted figure for 1940 ... £50,000

It is appreciated that under existing circumstances we shall not expend this sum of £50,000, but submit same as a basis to work upon.

We should appreciate your comments.

HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}
