X5050. To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re Cylinder Head. Confirming telephone conversation of this afternoon, we note your remarks regarding "B", "C" and "D" diagrams of cylinder heads sent with our memo E.4/HP.26.5.32. We attach a blueprint of LeC.3115 showing the alternative arrangement of which we spoke. The features illustrated on this drawing are as follows:- No.1. Open type head instead of the turbulent type shown on RR.scheme 101. We do not think the turbulent type is necessary on such a small cylinder, and we want the open type because it makes better use of the valves, and gives better sparking plug position and cooling. No.2. Inlet pipes moved to a position between cylinders to enable the ignition plug to be raised, as shown. The inlet bend at the same time is brought down to a lower position, and it becomes possible to machine more off the top face of the head, about .2, thereby reducing the weight. No.3. 6 exhaust ports which are intended to be served by two short manifolds and two downtakes. We are assuming the dynamo will come in between these downtakes and that the water pump will be forward of the front downtake. The one feature we do not like about LeC.3115 | ||
