Thank you for your various memos. on the gearbox,

We have again tried to reproduce the oil loss you experienced over here. We agree with your measurements of pressure in the rear compartment, and also found that by blocking up the breather hole in the change speed bracket, we could get 6" pressure in the gearbox. We therefore flogged the car up and down the Holyhead Road with this breather hole blocked up, having made arrangements to collect oil from the various places from which you say it escapes, but found that during the trip we did not lose one drop of oil although we succeeded in reaching a temperature in the gearbox of 87.

Could you let us know whether the oil retaining thread on the small shaft that drives the governor unit has too much clearance, or alternatively the wrong hand of thread.

We are also carrying out experiments to try and get more oil in the centre compartment, and arranging devices for lubricating the synchromesh cones.

With regard to the felt behind the flywheel, we are sorry about our mistake. We realise that there is no felt behind the oilite bush and wanted to prevent one being fitted behind the tail bearing.

We hope you will soon let us have your views on the necessity or not for this latter bearing, particularly with regard to the engine and gearbox not being in line.
