CHOICE OF OIL FOR THE BIJUR LUBRICATION SYSTEM.

We have carried out a number of tests on various oils to determine the best brand for use on the central lubrication system.

Messrs. Luvax, who are the Bijur representatives in England, and Bijur himself markets oils specially adapted for the system. They claim that their oils, which we believe come from the same source, perform adequately under all normal circumstances, and are especially good for maintaining their mobility at a low temperature. From our experience both in the laboratory and on test, we should say this claim is unjustified. The oil definitely becomes unworkable at a few degrees of frost. Springfield also say they are continually fighting Bijur on this point, and they now recommend Mobiloil A.{Mr Adams} Winter and Summer. We have tried this oil (Mobiloil A.{Mr Adams}) and while admitting it works reasonably in the winter, we think it is too thin to be suitable in hot weather, especially as many of our chassis will be sent abroad to hot climates. We are entirely in agreement with Bijur and Luvax that an oil of high viscosity which maintains its mobility at a low temperature is the most suitable. The correct operation of the system depends on the maintenance of uniform pressure in the pipe lines, and a slow rate of flow when the pedal is depressed.
