EFC. JC.29. X.3711 4.6.26. RE FAILURE OF CELL OF MULTIPLE STORAGE BATTERY. This battery has now been in use approximately 6½ years and has only just had one cell fail by shorting. It has always given a good capacity and a good high rate discharge. The condition of the cell was excellent. The wood separators were very good shewing no signs of wear. Both the positive and negative elements were very good having lost very little active material and being quite strong and robust. It may be worth noting that the plates have a diagonal brace or rib across, this must be to prevent distortion of the plates. Only about ¼" of sediment had collected in the bottom. The cell case was very strong and appeared to be made of ebonite. The cell had shorted by sediment accumulating at the edges of the separators and making contact between the plates, the reason being that the separators did not come up to the edges of the plates. This battery has done very good service and would have done much more if the separators had been correct. The peripheries of some of the positive plates have cracked since taking them out of the container. EFC/GJ. | ||
