(3) The position of the end of the ejector pipe in the mouth of the tank outlet pipe.

(4) The bottle containing the bi-metal contact thermo should not be enclosed but preferably exposed to the cooling air because the radiant heat from the tank and engine causes the light to come on prematurely if the unit is enclosed.

(5) The bottle should be given a slight tilt for drainage.

The warning level device requires adopting to all new tanks. This will be quite convenient since the A.M.'s latest regulations propose that all new tanks shall be tried out by engine maker.

The following are the leading particulars :-

Dia. of level indicator pipe ............. .300" bore
" " bell mouth ..................... .500"
" " ejector pipe ................... .300"
" 2 holes at bottom of ejector pipe ..... .090 each

The extreme ends of the ejector pipe sealed the two holes diametrically opposite .300" from the bottom of pipe.

The length of the indicator and ejector pipe is dependent on the tank design but the ejector pipe should project into the tank outlet pipe 3.2" i.e. from the bottom of the tank.

Provision has been made on the evaporatively cooled Kestrel in the Hart machine at Brooklands to test a level indicator unit in flight. The scheme is only applicable to future tanks on account of provision for mounting. For application to combined header tank and condenser, provision would have to be made on the side for the mounting of the bottle. The position of this scheme now is that we are awaiting detail drawings from the D.O. to enable us to test the final scheme and standardise.

He/Gib.
