EAGLE To Dy.{F R Danby}) from R.{Sir Henry Royce} EH.) ORIGINAL 6th July, 1918. 2 RECEIVED 8 JUL 1918 R8/G6718. RE BREAKAGE OF PLANET BOLTS. X 3168 B Referring to the breakage of the planet bolts, we can only account for this by assuming washer was bedding on the ball bearing instead of the spigot, and with face for nut out of truth, epicycloidal creep of bearing carried washer round and caused reverse bending stress added to tension. Support of bolt against centrifugal force of little value, spherical face for nut [text struck through] and increased clearance for bearings suggested, and spherical seating for nut.
