For the attention of Mr.Minchin.

Dear Sirs,

In regard to the question of burnt up versus bolted connections for our Phantom II chassis batteries of your and Exide manufacture, you will remember our principle reasons for being adverse to this change are in the fact of the bolted connections not so freely permitting expansion of the ebonite cell boxes, and that we have known cases of trouble arising from the strain set up on the ebonite collars round the terminal posts.

Your provision of the new form of gland incorporating, not only a vaseline gland, but also a rubber collar, we agree largely negatives this argument. This however, does not apply at present to Exide batteries, though naturally if a change were to be made we should like it to apply to both.

GS
You will gather that our present query to you is/to what would be the position with yourselves in proposing a similar modification to the terminal post glands of the Exide Co's cells, because we are satisfied that this double type of gland is an improvement in the prevention of acid creeping through the gland and consequent corrosion.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
